Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers - Album Review

Some call the guy a "stoner-rapper", a "young Snoop Dogg" (minus the gang stuff) a kid just trying to have some fun with music along with other things. Well whatever you want to label him as, the kid has talent. Yeah, he raps a lot (and I meant A LOT) about weed, but whatever, at least he's not pretending to be something he's not. From the opening lines of the 1st song "When I'm Gone" he seems cool with the labels by spitting "and they say all i rap about is bitches and champagne, you would' to if every night you seen the same thing...". Andd this is basically the direction the album goes towards for the most part. There's a lot of good melodies floating around through Rolling Papers, so if you're into that, this is for you!

My personal favorites/standouts on the album are "The Race" and "Rooftops". The flows on "The Race" are just plain dope. "Rooftops" has a great chorus along with not too shabby lyrics. Wiz never really says anything "lyrically" that's going to have you pressing the rewind button frequently; but what he lacks in that department, he makes up for with his flows. "No Sleep" is definitely the most "pop" sounding song on the LP (yes, more pop than "Roll Up"). Benny Blanco's production for the tracks sounds like he intended to have the Jonas Brothers sing on it and it somehow ended up in Wiz's hands. Definitely see it getting a lot of mainstream radio play either way.

"On My Level" is another stand-out cut produced by Jim Jonsin. The drums are really spaced out and give Wiz enough room to flex his party influenced rhymes over. If I would have heard this album about a year ago, I would easily say my favorite song is "Fly Solo". If you scroll down to the older posts you can see it was my "favorite song of the moment" a while back. I guess the good folks over at Atlantic Records loved it so much that they put it on the album. Its a cool, laid-back, kinda soft-rock feel type song.

"Wake Up" and "Cameras" both kinda have the same vibe. Two pretty solid selections that are hard not to vibe with. Overall the album isn't bad, isn't amazing so somewhere in-between. It's a pretty good major label debut that definitely has replay value to it. I'm stuck on this number of 6.5 (out of 10) for rating; sooo i'ma go with that. But these are just my opinions. YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS!!
