Hey everyone! I decided to do a lil album review for Mike Posner's debut album "31 Minutes to Take Off". Alright, "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" took a while to grow on me, but it is definitely a stand out track on the album. A real grown sounding r&b song (minus the cheesy title) and it really hits once the guitars come in on the chorus (provided by thaat guy that i posted on below... Bruno Mars). Please don't go is sort of similar to "Cooler than me". Uptempo synthy-pop dance track. A good song none the less and will probably be one of the single's do to the similarities.
Mike chooses to slow it down a teeny bit and switches it to 90s pop style with the song "Deja Vu". This song contains the only features on the album, Boyz 2 Men singing background vocals. Yeah, its as good as it sounds while you're reading this. Kind of lazy on the subject matter of this, but it's well produced by himself, melodies are dope and the collabo doesn't hurt at all with the vocoder (i said vocoder, not to be confused with autotune). Another style comes in when Mike switches to more of a mid tempo hip hop song in "Do U Wanna?". The beat is pretty cool and has a nice background provided by Cisco Adler of Shwayzee fame. The chorus is funky and shows his diversity. The song basically mike approaching a female and asking her if she wants to be his "baby" or "girl". I likes. "Cheated" brings back the up-tempo synth-pop dance stuff but it fits nicely. Normally r&b singers are complaining about how they wish they never cheated, i'm sorry and blah blah blah, but mike makes a song where he says that he wishes that he would have cheated, says the girl's full name, AND you can dance to it... wow. Another one that I think might be a single if the label decides to keep going in this direction. Now we approach the ending moments of the album. Most of these songs are more "ballad" type and slower, but arguably some of the better and more content filled ones. "Gone in September" is definitely my favorite song on the album as of right now. Talks about his flings and how he used to be a nice guy and now he will be gone in september, pretty similar to my life at the moment. lol jk, kinda =) . This beat also has assistance from mr. Adler. Pretty catchy and is def my choice for the 3rd single, lets see if the labels see what i see. "Save Your Goodbye", "Synthesizer", "Delta 1406" and "Falling" are all pretty slow tempo'd songs that are pretty content filled and not your typical mainstream r&b ballads. Def worth a cpl of listens if not multiple.
Overall, The album flows really well. The way an album should. Each of the songs go into each other well and don't just sound like a bunch of good songs thrown together to make an album (coughhhh coughhh... drake..... coughhh coughh). Some may say that it sounds too "mainstream" from his mixtape stuff. Whatever that means, its 2010 people.. if it doesn't make dollars... it doesn't make sense. Ofcourse the label is going to make him make songs that they can sell him on. And i feel he did a great job making singles with his own flavor. so i guess its an opinionated 7 outta 10 for me.
